vpnkit is a user‑space networking toolkit designed to give virtual machines and containers reliable access to the host network without requiring kernel drivers or elevated privileges. Originally used in Docker Desktop, it bridges guest traffic to the host, handling NAT, port forwarding, DNS resolution, and proxy/VPN compatibility. By tunneling Ethernet packets over HTTP when needed, it works smoothly behind restrictive corporate VPNs and proxies and avoids complex host routing changes.

Key capabilities:

  • User-space network stack with no kernel modules required
  • NAT, port forwarding, and DNS proxying for guests
  • Seamless operation behind corporate VPNs and HTTP/HTTPS proxies
  • Works on macOS and Windows; integrates with HyperKit and similar backends
  • Useful diagnostics, including optional packet capture for debugging

Typical use cases include providing network connectivity to development VMs and containerized workloads while respecting host VPN and proxy settings.

vpnkit is developed by GitHub, Inc. and is used by 10 users of Software Informer. The most popular versions of this product among our users are: 2.2 and 2.3. The name of the program executable file is vpnkit.exe.
